Figuring out how much to spend on groomsmen gifts is one of those wedding planning questions that doesn't have a simple answer. By the time you get around to shopping for your guys, you've already spent a small fortune on the venue, catering, and everything else that goes into the big day.
We get this question constantly, so we decided to let the data do the talking. We analyzed over 50,000 groomsmen gift orders from our store to find out exactly what real grooms are spending.
Based on our analysis of over 50,000 orders placed by grooms buying for their full wedding party, here are the numbers:
Average spent per groomsman: $43
Most common spending range: $40 to $50 per person
Average groomsmen party size: 6 to 7 guys
Average total order: $275 across the full wedding party
So most grooms are spending somewhere between $40 and $50 per groomsman, with the overall sweet spot landing right around $43. That's not a rule, just what real grooms are actually doing when they check out.
One of the more interesting findings from our data is that grooms with smaller parties tend to spend more per person. That makes sense. If you only have four or five guys standing up with you, you're more likely to go for a premium gift like a personalized duffel bag or a full box set. Larger parties tend to gravitate toward individual items like flasks, sunglasses, or beer mugs.
4 to 5 groomsmen: $60 to $70 per person
6 to 7 groomsmen: $50 to $60 per person
8 to 10 groomsmen: $40 to $50 per person
10 or more groomsmen: $30 to $40 per person
The right amount depends on your overall wedding budget. A couple spending $15,000 on their wedding will naturally budget differently than one spending $50,000.
A good rule of thumb is to spend about 2% of your total wedding budget on groomsmen gifts. If your wedding costs $20,000, that works out to about $400 total, or roughly $55 to $65 per groomsman in a party of six or seven. A $40,000 wedding would put you closer to $100 per person.
A couple spending $15,000 on their wedding will naturally budget differently than one spending $50,000. Neither number is wrong. The most important thing is choosing something personal and thoughtful, not hitting a specific dollar amount.
If you're working with a tighter budget, there's nothing wrong with spending $20 to $25 per guy. We have a full collection of great groomsmen gifts under $20 that still feel personal and well thought out. On the other end, if you want to go all out, our groomsmen gift box sets are the most popular choice for grooms who want to make a real impression.
Across all of our groomsmen party orders, these are the products grooms reach for most often:
Build Your Own Groomsmen Box is our top seller by a wide margin. Grooms pick the items they want, and we assemble everything into a personalized gift box for each groomsman. It's popular because every guy in the party can get something slightly different.
The Ultimate Box Set is the go-to for grooms who want a complete, ready-to-go gift. It includes a flask, a bottle opener, a pocket knife, and a shot glass, all personalized and packed in a wooden keepsake box.
Personalized Duffel Bags have become one of our fastest growing categories. Grooms love them because they're practical, they look great, and the guys will actually use them long after the wedding.
Whatever you spend, keep it consistent across the group. Giving your best man a $100 gift set and everyone else a $20 flask is a fast way to create awkward energy. If you want to do something extra for your best man, handle that separately and privately.
Your groomsmen are standing up for you on one of the biggest days of your life. The gift doesn't need to break the bank. It just needs to show them you put some thought into it. A $30 personalized gift that feels personal will always land better than a $100 generic gift that could have been for anyone.
We also looked at total order value by state to see how spending varies across the country. These numbers represent the average total a groom spends on gifts for his entire wedding party, not per groomsman.
