  • 9 Tips on Picking Groomsmen Attire That Won't Break the Bank

by Chris Bajda May 17, 2023

It is wedding time, and we all know what that means: the groomsmen need to look sharp as a tack without emptying their wallets. Yeah, easier said than done, right?

But fear not, for we have nine tips up my sleeve that'll have you looking like a million bucks (okay, maybe not a million, but at least like a hundred or so) when you strut down that aisle.

So let's get started on finding that perfect groomsmen outfit that won't leave you penniless!

9 Tips on Picking Groomsmen Attire

    Tip 1: Know your Budget

It is important to know your budget before you start shopping for groomsmen attire.

It will help you stay within your means and find groomsmen wear that fits your needs. You will also be less likely to make impulse purchases that may not fit your budget.

Don't forget to factor in taxes when calculating your budget, especially if you are buying online.

Tip 2: Look for Affordable Suits and Tuxes

If you are on a budget, do not panic. There are plenty of great-looking, affordable groomsmen suits, and tuxedos that won't break the bank for your modern wedding.

The first step is to list all the wedding party members and what they wear. The bride might have this list, or you can make one yourself.

It will help you determine what everyone needs and how much groomsmen suits will cost for your wedding party.

Secondly, it is time to start shopping for groomsmen suits!

You can go into the store, browse online, or visit a local groomsmen attire shop for ideas. I suggest using Google or Pinterest for inspiration.

If your budget is tight, finding affordable groomsmen attire that will meet your needs can be hard.

To make everything easy for you, I have compiled the groomsmen's attire list that will fit your budget: Suits That Will Make Your Groomsmen Look like Studs.

    Tip 3: Consider Color Combinations

When picking out groomsmen attire, it is important to consider color combinations.

While black suits are a classic option for groomsmen, you should also consider other colors that will work with your bridesmaid dresses.

For instance, if your bridesmaids are wearing purple dresses, purple ties would be a great way to match them without being too matchy-matchy, and blue ties would look nice with their navy dresses for matching suits.

If you have any questions about coordinating colors and patterns, don't hesitate to ask your wedding planner or call a fashionista friend!

Tip 4: Decide How Formal You Want to Be

There are two main factors to consider when deciding how formal your groomsmen's attire should be: the type of wedding you are planning and where you are having it.

If you are having a small, intimate wedding in your backyard, then it is probably okay for everyone to come as they are.

But if you are planning a larger event that might have guests coming from out of town, or if this is a particular formal event (think black tie) or beach wedding (navy blue dress pants), then it is best to have some guidelines in place.

In these cases, the dress code is usually defined by the time of day (e.g., cocktail groomsmen attire) and whether or not there will be dancing during the evening (e.g., floor-length gowns).

Tip 5: Wear your Suit before Wedding First

If you are unsure how your wedding suit will look, or if you are afraid it won't be formal enough, wear your groomsmen outfits before the wedding and see how you feel.

It is always better to be able to change your mind in advance to match the wedding theme.

Plus, by wearing your wedding suit with different dress shirts before the wedding day, you will know that everything is in order and there are no last-minute adjustments to make.

It is also important that your groomsmen know what they are wearing to coordinate their wedding attire with yours.

You want the groomsmen to look as good as possible at your beach wedding because they will be right next to where the groom stand!

Tip 6: Ask for Feedback from Experienced Friends or Family Members

One of the best ways to find something that suits your needs is to ask for feedback from people who have been in your shoes before the wedding day.

When you do, give them a sense of what kind of event this is (cruise or beach weddings) and how formal or informal it will be so they can provide better advice for the perfect attire.

If you are looking for ideas, make sure you know what budget you are working with for groomsmen attire.

The last thing you want is someone telling you that they have a great idea and then seeing the price tag and realizing the groomsmen wear is not affordable.

Letting them know upfront will help prevent any embarrassing moments!

Tip 7: Use Accessories such as Tie Bars, Cufflinks, Socks, and Shoes

Accessories can be a great way to set your groomsmen apart from each other and make them feel like an individual.

Tie bars, cufflinks, pocket squares, and dress shoes, these suit accessories are easy to find for under $20 at most retailers.

You can also find some pretty cool tie bars to match your own style with more than just a clip.

For example, this tie bar has a bottle opener on it!

Tip 8: Dress According to the Weather Conditions of the Wedding

It is important to dress according to the weather of your wedding.

For example, if your friend is getting married during the winter, a tuxedo with a long-sleeved shirt, linen pants, and groomsmen's vests is best.

If he is getting married during summer, groomsmen attire without a tie is best or two-piece suits are better!

Dress according to the weather conditions of your wedding!

Tip 9. Look Online before Hitting a Store to Get an Idea of What You Should Pay

If you find a suit style that seems perfect but is just outside your price range, do not fret.

Instead of giving up right away, take your search online.

You will be able to find out what other stores are selling the same style groom's attire for and use that as a bargaining chip when you are trying to negotiate with the store.

Plus, if you find something in-store and find it cheaper online at another store, you have an excuse to go back and try again!

    Final Thoughts

Picking out a groomsmen's attire can be difficult, especially if you are working with a limited budget.

Instead of running to your local department store and picking up something in haste, take a few minutes to think about what you want your groomsmen to wear.

With a bit of forethought and creativity, you will find no shortage of options for men's formalwear that won't break the bank.
